A hundred deputies challenged the suspension of Parliament on Wednesday by organizing a virtual meeting, during which they voted in favor of a bill aimed at annulling the full powers of Kais Saied.

Kais Saied made the announcement during a meeting of the “National Security Council» which he presided over, a few hours after the rebellion of one hundred and twenty Tunisian deputies. These Tunisian parliamentarians had challenged that same day the suspension of Parliament, decided in July by the president, by organizing a virtual session during which they voted to cancel their exceptional measures. “I announce today, at this historic moment, the dissolution of the Assembly of People’s Representatives to preserve the State and its institutions and to preserve the Tunisian people.Kais Saied said in a video released by the presidency.
After months of political blockade, Kais Saied, elected at the end of 2019, assumed full powers on July 25, dismissing the prime minister and suspending Parliament. On September 22, the Head of State formalized his full powers with “exceptional measuresextending the suspension of Parliament. They also allow him to legislate by decree, preside over the Council of Ministers and modify the laws of the country.
At the call of the Office of the Assembly of People’s Representatives (ARP), a body that brings together the Presidency of Parliament and representatives of the parties seated there, 120 deputies (out of a total of 217) participated in this online plenary, chaired by Tarek Fertiti, Vice President of Parliament, Independent. The president of the ARP, Rached Ghannouchi, also leader of the Islamist-inspired party Ennahdha, did not participate in this plenary session.

One hundred and sixteen deputies voted in favor of a bill aimed at reversing the exceptional measures adopted by Kais Saied, which they say are blocking the democratic process and establishing a one-person government in the country that was the birthplace of the Arab Spring. The deputies, including elected members of Ennahdha and independents, also called for the organization of early legislative and presidential elections to get out of the political and socio-economic crisis.
Also acknowledging their share of responsibility in this crisis, they called for a national dialogue between all parties. “We are not frozen or suspended deputies as you want (President Saied), except to be under the power of a new pharaohSaid independent MP Safi Said, a former presidential candidate.
At the opening of a national security council on Monday, President Saied denounced “what has been called an illegal ”virtual meeting”“which are only”desperate attempts without any value (…) and coup attempts“. The powerful trade union center UGTT also rejected this Tuesday the suspended Parliament meetings, which have as their objective, according to this organization, “lead the country into conflict and political division».
