Kia introduces its new Niro SUV with a fully electrified, plug-in hybrid and fully electric hybrid range. The design is modernized both inside and out to face increasingly fierce competition.

A true bestseller of the manufacturer (+7.9% in 2021 with all engines combined), the Kia Niro, however, begins to show the weight of the years with a slightly dated design and its J Eco-Car multi-engine platform. . To face increasingly tough competition, Kia has decided to remodel it from top to bottom while continuing to offer it with three engines: hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric.

To leave no one indifferent, the new Niro affirms its style and enhances its silhouette. The SUV works on its design with a front that adopts the latest version of the Tiger Face specific to the new Kia. Wider than its predecessor, it now extends from the engine cover to the bottom of the front fenders. The headlights are equipped with Full LED headlights and LED fog lights. The imposing shield is distinguished by its two-tier design with upper and lower fairings. The electric version differs from the hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions by a two-tone closed grille and exclusive side moldings. In addition, the charging socket of this version is now centered on the front face.

The profile of the new Kia Niro is also refined, with a slightly profiled C-pillar and a line that gains in aerodynamics with a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.29. The design of the rims is also part of this logic. At the rear, boomerang-like lights reinforce the affiliation with the new EV6. Customers will be able to choose from nine exterior colors, three of which – Pearl White, Cityscape Green and Mineral Blue – allow the C-pillar to be painted in another colour. The new Kia Niro gains in any case 6.5 cm in length, 2.5 cm in width and 1 cm in height. The wheelbase is also 2 cm longer.

The cabin also underwent a major facelift and benefited from the integration of durable materials. The seats are trimmed with artificial leather, the trunk lid is made from 75% recycled fabric, and the headliner is made from 56% recycled materials. The cabin is improved, with a double screen of 10.25 inches each for the on-board instrumentation and the infotainment part. A new multi-control system also allows passengers to operate multiple functions using a single control. Through the Kia Connect app, drivers of the all-electric Niro can view and monitor their vehicle’s charge status and even plan a route using online navigation, sync calendars and access in-vehicle features such as location of nearby charging stations, as well as -weather forecasts and traffic alerts.

The new Niro benefits from many other convenience features, including Remote Parking Assist (RSPA) and Two-Way Charging (V2L). Among the driving aids, we will also find the anti-collision system with blind spot detection, rear traffic detection, emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, in addition to navigation and roadside assistance. The entire interface also benefits from OTA updates. Finally, the trunk volume gains 15 liters compared to the previous version in hybrid (451 l) and even 24 l in PHEV and electric (343 l and 475 l respectively).

On the road, the behavior has been revised with different suspension and steering settings. The rear structure has been reinforced to reduce vibrations and the ground connections have been optimized to improve road holding. Comfort should also win with the reworked sound insulation.

The hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions are equipped with the 1.6-liter Smartstream GDI gasoline engine associated with its six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT6), which also gains 2.3 kg. In the hybrid version, the four-cylinder unit develops a maximum combined power of 141 hp when combined with the 32 kW (43 hp) permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. The plug-in hybrid version is equipped with a 62 kW (84 PS) electric motor that helps deliver a maximum combined power of 183 PS, and offers a range in all-electric mode of 65 km (WLTP combined cycle). The hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions offer a Green Zone mode, which automates the use of electrical energy in certain zones based on indications from the navigation system, driving habits or the driver’s choices.

Finally, the electric version, recently named Niro EV and no longer e-Niro, is equipped with an electric motor that develops 204 hp for 255 Nm of torque powered by a 64.8 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery that allows you to travel 463 km (in WLTP cycle). Unfortunately, even with fast charging, it will take 43 minutes at best to go from 10 to 80%, which is a shame. The Niro EV is capable of towing up to 750kg.
