The Civic it is an essential model. Since its creation, more than 27 million copies have been sold worldwide and even almost 200,000 in France in the space of 50 years. Over the years and in constant growth, it has gone from a city car to a sedan halfway between a compact and a family car. Today comes the 11th generation.
Brand new, this new Civic shares some points of similarity with the current one. It is therefore still a hatchback but has many specificities: the bonnet, which benefits from a simpler design with fewer ribs, is lowered by 25mm on the sides, making it more horizontal, the grille is widened but becomes thinner. The headlights remain generous in size and feature a new lighting signature in the form of hooks.
The objective of this new Civic is to be dynamic but also sober, both aesthetically and mechanically. It is characterized, therefore, by certain details such as the line of the bodywork that is present throughout the length of the vehicle and especially at the rear, which gives it the false air of coupé sedans. Visual effect of the lights that give the impression of being one with the third stop sign thus creating a strip of light, but it is not.
The dimensions are still secret, but the length should be around 4.60 m. The glazed surface increases while the height of the tailgate, now in composite, is reduced by 50 mm
Inside, the Civic is revolutionizing. Gone is the complex dashboard of the previous one, now it shows clearly simple, very horizontal lines, directly inspired by those of the latest HR-V. Facing the driver, the 10.2-inch instrumentation can be digital (only with the Advanced high finish) and the multimedia touch screen measures 9 inches. Unlike other brands, sling it hasn’t given in to the all-digital craze as certain controls like air conditioning remain physical. The originality of this Civic comes from the air vents that run the width of the dash, hidden behind a honeycomb grille. Aesthetically, the set is successful as well as the quality of the materials and the assembly.
Although the official values are not yet known, the rear space and cargo volume promise to be generous.
In the rear seats, thanks to a wheelbase increased by 35 mm, the Civic offers very good habitability, both for the legs and for the head, preferably for two passengers due to a voluminous tunnel. The trunk volume unknown at the moment promises to be generous and of the same ilk as the previous one, which had one of 478 liters.
The Civic, already well equipped with driving aids, inherits a center airbag from level 2 autonomous driving and, for the first time from the Japanese manufacturer, adaptive high beams.
This new Civic will only be available as a hybrid. No gasoline and less diesel. Under its hood is a new 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle direct injection engine. This is associated with two electric motors, which are used primarily to drive the car forward, with only the combustion engine intervening at higher speeds. The maximum accumulated power is 135 kW, or 184 hp, and the torque reaches 315 Nm. Pending homologation, Honda announces promising consumption and C02 emissions with less than 5 litres/100 and 110 g. The most sporty will wait a few more months before discovering the Type R, the sports version.
This new Civic will go on sale next fall. Pricing is unknown at this time and will be revealed in June. Meanwhile, the new Honda compact will make its first official presentation at the Lyon show, which opens its doors today.
