This is probably the biggest failure in the history of FC Nantes. After more than three and a half years of failure that ended with a six-month absence from the professional team, Anthony Limbombe left FC Nantes. His contract was officially terminated earlier this week.a few days before his forced return to the first team, thanks to the pressure exerted by the legal committee of the LFP. Between August 2018 and April 2022, the Belgian will have only worn the yellow and green jersey 38 times for 4 goals and 3 assists. He is however the most expensive signing of the club, €8.5M.
However, when he arrived from Club Brugge, the winger had a great hope sticker stuck to his forehead. He is coming off a good season with Blauw at Zwart (6 goals and 6 assists in 27 Jupiler Pro League games), with which he won the championship. Reinforced by this status, he receives between 80,000 and 100,000 euros gross (according to sources) per month, one of the highest salaries in Nantes, but on the ground things are not going well. Also not helped by context, he struggles to prove himself to him and even has to wait until April 2019 to finally unlock his meter.
Of a record transfer of 8.5 million euros…
What followed will be a long series of failures. Loaned to Standard the following year, he spent only six months at Liège because of a knee injury that immobilized him throughout the autumn. When he returns to the field in Nantes at the end of winter 2020, here comes the lockdown. He still didn’t know it, but it was on March 7 of that year when he played his last match with Canarias. During the summer preparation for the new season, this time it was a torn adductor that stopped him in his tracks. Upon his return, he will remain on the bench (13 times without entering the game), before being put in the closet.
“I feel liberated, I am resuming my career.entrust Limbombe to West of France this Thursday. I can finally do things my way. I also think my departure relieves the club. We had reached a dead end and it was no longer habitable for both parties. I am happy with the result, despite the fact that I have had a few very difficult months. Even if the legal commission agreed with me, I also know that it did not solve the problem, that I was not welcomed among the professionals. It is never good to return thanks to a judicial decision, it leaves traces. And I had a contract until 2024. A solution had to be found.
…to the termination of the contract secretly
With more than two years of contract, the Belgian was still to collect around €2.5 million. If figures have not been leaked, Nantes had to dip into their wallets to terminate the player’s contract. And to say that at the base, he was going to join Huddersfield and not the FCN, but due to a history of agent commission, the transfer was not concluded. Limbombe then changed managers to work with Mogi Bayat. Very influential in Belgium, the latter has also become over time the unofficial sporting director of FC Nantes. It is he who obtains a very juicy contract for his client.
The starting point of this sporting and economic fiasco. Before finding a radical solution, Canarias tried to loan him elsewhere but negotiations failed for a loan to Boavista last summer and then to Zulte Waregem in January. “I toughened myself up mentally, I learned a lot (from these 4 years in Nantes). There have been ups and downs, but above all many lows, and they make you grow. It opened my mind to so many things.”, still retains the man of now 27 years. According to CMRthis case will have cost FC Nantes at least 15 million euros between transfer, wages, bonuses and contract termination…
