They haven’t finished breaking down. Former spouses Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are accusing each other of defamation in a trial expected to last several weeks.
On Tuesday, April 12, Amber Heard’s lawyers hit hard for this first day of trial, broadcast live on television, and which takes place in Fairfax, near Washington. In particular, they described Johnny Depp as having “rage” outbursts that regularly lead to physical and sexual violence. They even evoke a husband who can turn into a “monster” under the influence of drugs and alcohol, putting his young companion through hell.
At the origin of this legal battle in which the first two accuse each other of defamation, a column published in the Washington Post he is four years old. The actress then explained that she is a “victim of domestic violence” and she feels harassed by society, having denounced this violence two years earlier.
A “demon” transformed by drugs and alcohol
Therefore, Amber Heard’s defense chose the attack for this first day of hearing. Referring to drug cocktails, alcohol, ecstasy, magic mushrooms and cocaine, attorney Elaine Bredehoft said that “the monster (…) appeared when she drank or used drugs,” according to statements reported by the Huffington Post.
She describes a man with “enormous anger” in him that transformed him into a real “demon” who “verbally, psychologically, physically and sexually assaulted” his partner. To back up her point, she also recounted in detail several scenes of violence that allegedly took place in March 2015 in Australia.
Two lawsuits for defamation
Never, in her column published in 2018, the 35-year-old actress never mentioned Johnny Depp’s name, but did mention the domestic violence accusations made against her husband in 2016. She had finally dropped her accusations during their 2017 divorce, to cashing a check for $7 million.
L’acteur de 58 ans, que a toujours nié les violences envers son ex-épouse, s’est senti visé dans les colonnes du journal, et a immédiatement porté plainte pour diffamation, réclamant au passage la coquette somme de 50 million dollars de damages. In exchange, Amber Heard also filed a complaint for the same reasons, claiming 100 million dollars.
A young woman “always in confrontation”
Benjamin Chew, Johnny Depp’s lawyer, accuses the young woman of wanting revenge after the divorce. Two years later, she “decided to remind the world of these venomous accusations in a world-renowned magazine,” he added.
Johnny Depp’s sister, Christi Dembrowski, also testified, describing Amber Heard as “always confrontational,” “grossly exaggerating” her husband’s addiction problems and regularly calling him a “fat old man.”
The trial is expected to last several more weeks, and many personalities will be called as witnesses. Among those we find James Franco, Paul Bettany but also Elon Musk, who had dated the actress after her divorce. That promises.
