Pelicans dominate Spurs to challenge Clippers in play-in final

It was the game of all dangers since the loser was eliminated from the 2021/22 season. And in this context, it was the Pelicans who stood firm, at home and led by a boiling public, under the impetus of an excellent Ingram-McCollum duo, too strong in attack for the Spurs.

After an observational first quarter for both teams (26-22 for the hosts), the Pelicans extended the distance later, initially just before halftime (61-50), on the impetus of a huge heat stroke from CJ McCollum ( 27 points at the break), then with more amplitude after the break, after the rise of Brandon Ingram and Jonas Valanciunas in the third quarter (+19). Overall, Willie Green’s men are playing a fairly calm game, in which they are largely in control.

But the Spurs end up waking up: in the last quarter, the “Pop” company starts a furious comeback, beats the Pelicans 16-1 and the difference goes from +21 to +6 (96-75 to 97-91)! More fear than harm for the Pelicans, who react after a timeout by Willie Green, through Brandon Ingram, who scores two important shots from mid-range to give his team back air (101-91).

The Spurs are still fighting but they can no longer make “stops” on defense. The gap remains at +10 and the timer runs until the final buzzer. Malgré une grosse frayeur en fin de partie, the Pelicans are imposent at the end of a match that they ont assez largely dominated, and envoient San Antonio, which kicked off the first tour du « play-in » for the deuxième année consécutive, vacation.

WHAT TO REMEMBER

– The bankruptcy of the starters of the Spurs in the first half. If San Antonio’s five majors scored half the Spurs’ points in the first half (25 points), that’s still less than CJ McCollum… alone! The Pelicans defense planted 27 points in the first half, with a hot shot in particular in the second quarter that allowed them to sign a first break. The Spurs starters then woke up in the second half (70 of 103 points at the end), but given the final result, they will regret this delay in ignition.

– Pelicans vs. Clippers. The Wolves ranked 7th, there is now only one playoff berth available in the West. This 8th place, synonymous with a first round matchup against the Suns, will be decided on Friday, during a final match between the Pelicans and the Clippers.

TOPS/FLOPS

CJ McCollum and Brandon Ingram, the “hit one-two.” The former kept the Spurs at a safe distance in the first half, the latter pushed them back in the second half, and more particularly in the fourth quarter, to end their furious “run”. As expected, the two players kept the house on offense and finished with 59 points in total (32 for CJ McCollum, 27 for Brandon Ingram). The duo’s attacking talent, especially in the strategic midrange area, was too much for Spurs to contain.

Jonas Valančiūnas. The Lithuanian center stomped on the Spurs racket and signed a double-double of authority: 22 points and 14 rebounds. Along with him, the Pelicans have largely dominated the interior battle (56 points in the paint for New Orleans, against 38 for San Antonio).

Devin Vassell. The young ‘second’ winger has been the most outstanding starter for the Spurs. He compiled 23 points (7/13 triples), 2 rebounds and 3 assists, and was one of the main architects of San Antonio’s “run” in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain, but the former Florida state certainly gained experience after such a performance in a high-stakes game.

⛔️ Dejounte Murray and Keldon Johnson. The two strongmen of the five great Spurs disappointed: the first finished with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists, but the road was not there (5/19), and the alarm clock came late. The second does little better, with 15 points at 6/20. Without the input of the two mainstays of the five majors, San Antonio fell behind in the first half, and paid in cash at the end of the game, despite a reaction that briefly made the Pelicans hesitate.
