Advice from Stéphane Figueroa, General Manager of Fluidra France, based in Perpignan, and President of the Federation of Swimming Pool Professionals.
It is the beautiful season and, with it, the return of moments of relaxation in the pool. According to the Federation of Swimming Pool Professionals (FPP), in 2021 around 90,000 were sold in France.
“France is a very dynamic market”, explains Stéphane Figueroa, General Manager of Fluidra France, a subsidiary of the Spanish group based in perpignanand president of the FPP. It is even the first European market, well ahead of the second, Spain, with 30,000 swimming pools”. But before betting on an investment in leisure, these are the main elements to take into account.
1. How much does it cost?
According to data from the FPP, the average cost of a swimming pool is €25,000. “It is the price of a pool of 8 m by 4 m”, specifies Stéphane Figueroa. So it all depends on the choice you make: a pool with a cover or a masonry pool. “Opting for a masonry pool is 30% more expensive than a shell pool.”
2. What kind of pool?
You have the choice, therefore, between a shell pool or a masonry pool. Besides cost, there are other things that set them apart. “Opting for a shell goes faster. But the downside is that, being an industrialized product, you don’t always have control over the shapes. It’s standard.”
3. When to order it?
This is the most sensitive point. Contrary to what one might imagine, in spring it is already too late. “The ideal is to start the process in September or October,” insists the president of the FPP.
An investment that enhances your property
The pool market has become very democratized in recent years. “In 2017, most of those who invested in a pool were retirees. Today, it is the workers, whose participation has increased by 15%”, says Stéphane Figueroa, president of the professional federation. Another interesting figure: 3,000, which is, in euros, the average monthly income of a person who has a swimming pool built. The pool has also become a means of increasing the value of the property. “The pool is a real estate investment, which increases the value of the property by 20%.
“If they tell you that it is possible to order your pool today to deliver this summer, run away, it is not serious”. In absolute terms, the deadline for the complete delivery of a pool, ready to be used, is “July 15 at the latest”.
4. From whom?
There, Stéphane Figueroa’s opinion is blunt: “the only thing you have to check is if the person with whom you invest in a pool has the label propiscines“. This is the “guarantee of dealing with a true professionalsince the market is facing a problem of qualifications”, which, in addition, “will take care of all the related procedures, such as the declaration to the public administration, which allows you to benefit from the ten-year guarantee”.
5. What security system?
Secure installation is mandatory. “This helps protect children under the age of 5.” The choice consists of different formulas, whose cost ranges between €300 and €20,000, depending on whether it is a classic alarm, an automatic cover, a barrier or a shelter. “The advantage of the shelter is that it can heat the water or keep it warm.” But, “a refuge in our region is not necessarily necessary.”
