news culture Super Mario: 36 Years Later, The Animated Movie Found And Restored By Enthusiasts!
On December 21, 2022, Illumination (The Minions) will return to theaters with an animated film based on the Super Mario license. Overseen by Shigeru Miyamoto on behalf of Nintendo, this feature film is not the first Super Mario animated film…
Super Mario in the movies: an obstacle course?
Made by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenicthe next animated movie Super Mario It will feature the participation of numerous personalities who will lend their voices to the different characters. Anya Taylor-Joy will play Peach, Jack Black will be BowserSeth Rogen will play the role of Donkey Kong, while Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World) will play Mario. This decision disappointed many fans of Charles Martinet, who has voiced the mustachioed plumber for almost 32 years. However, the latter will be present in the feature film through a cameo that we are waiting to discover. If everything seems to fit for this movie to be a success, The history of Super Mario in the cinema is complicated.
Many still remember the live-action film released in 1993, which was added to the list of cult films for its concerns. Nevertheless, there was another movie, in 1986as related Romain Mahut on his Twitter account. This is an animated movie titled Super Mario Bros.: Peach-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen! (literally Super Mario Bros. : The Great Mission to save Princess Peach!). I never heard? It is normal.
The forgotten film has been found
On the one hand, it was not released in France, on the other hand, We thought it was lost! In fact, when the film, directed by Masami Hata, produced by Masakatsu Suzoki and Tsunemasa Hatano, and written by Hideo Takayashiki, was released in Japan, it was accompanied by a very low production of videocassettes. Many of them have disappeared, and the very rare copies for sale are extremely expensive and non-functional.
very miraculously, Youtuber Carnivol was able to find what appears to be the last playable 16mm tape still in existence, and began work on a restoration and digitization of the film. In 2021, she joins him in this FemboyFilms project. The coils were visibly quite damaged, but the 4K restoration could have taken place:
We are honored to be the ones to restore this film (…). It is from a 16mm reduced print probably used for small local screenings at the time of its release. This is probably one of, if not the only surviving print in the world, and another Carnivol fan was able to get their hands on it from him in 2016. He quickly scanned it and set out to restore it, but ended up hitting a roadblock.
That’s where we come in. In 2021, years after he began work on the project himself, Carnivol and FemboyFilms reached an agreement to restore the film based on the currently existing scan. While we would have preferred to scan the reels ourselves, the existing scan was more than doable, despite a few extra headaches here and there.
After many months of cleaning up the dust and grime, the restoration work could really begin, but There remained the problem of colorimetry.. To circumvent this concern, restorers have had access to Promotional material very well preserved and provided by Forest of Illusion. The subtitles have been cleaned up and corrected, while the sound has been kept in Dolby Surround 2. From now on, and unless Nintendo intervenes, the film Super Mario Bros. – The great mission to rescue Princess Peach!with a duration of 1H01, it is fully available in Youtube !
